The use of a floor self-leveling compound depends on how much the concrete floor is uneven. You can use a long spirit level to accurately measure the unevenness of your floor.

Only use a floor self-leveling compound if the floor is 5mm out of level. Otherwise, not!

Mark High and Low Points on the Floor

Take a pencil or chalk and mark the areas where there are spots, dips, or bumps. Then sweep the floor over using a level to help reveal the missed depressions in the floor, if any.

The Types of Floor Self-Leveling Compound

Floor self-leveling compounds can be categorized into two main types. The first is a powder in which latex liquid comes in a separate container. To use this, simply combine both of them. The second type is a powder bag with the latex compound included. To prepare it, you just need to mix it with water.  The latter type is much easier to use.

How To Apply A Floor Self-Leveling compound?

Laying a floor self-leveling compound involves the following steps.

  • Clean the Floor

Start by removing everything from the room and then clean it with a good sweep followed by a vacuum cleaner.

  • Fill Cracks in the Floor

Once your floor is cleaned, ensure all the large cracks are filled. You can do this by putting the nozzle of the filler or sealer bottle into the cracks and squeezing it out until the cracks are properly sealed. Alternatively, a trowel can be used to press the sealer/filler into the crack.

  • Apply the Primer

Once cracks have filled, it’s time to apply the primer using a soft-bristle push broom. It needs to be completely dry after the application.

  • Mix the Compound

Mix the compound with mixing until the right consistency is achieved. Make sure to not mix more than one bag as it gets dried after 15 to 20 minutes.

  • Let the Concrete Leveler Dry

Once the compound has been completely applied on the floor, let it dry completely as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Some compounds dry quickly while others take some time. Now you can easily install other flooring types on top of your concrete floors.

So, this is all about floor self-leveling!
